NEIS is an Australian Government initiative to assist eligible job seekers who are interested in starting and running a small business.

New Business Assistance with NEIS commenced in 1985 and is currently the longest running and most successful self employment program in the country.

New Business Assistance with NEIS provides you with a nationally accredited Certificate IV course in New Small Business, business advice and mentoring, as well as ongoing income support for up to 39 weeks.

Who is it for

Eligible job seekers who want to start and run their own small business.

Course duration

We provide accredited small business training followed by business advice and mentoring support for 52 weeks. Start any time.

Delivery method

A variety of training methods are offered to NEIS participants throughout our contracted regions enabling mixed mode, distance learning, and classroom based training.


New Business Assistance with NEIS participants do not pay a fee. Eligible participants receive an allowance equivalent to the full adult rate Newstart allowance for up to 39 weeks, plus rental assistance for 26 weeks, if eligible.


Course work may be done online or paper based resulting in a full business plan specific to your business.


Our business mentors have proven business acumen and experience in marketing, finance, accounting and other relevant business skills.
