What you’ll learn

What you’ll learn

Across three hands-on sessions you’ll build the two core skills every café role needs.

Barista — Prepare & serve espresso coffee (SITHFAB025):

  • Set up, use and clean a commercial espresso machine and grinder
  • Extract quality espresso and texture milk for a range of coffees
  • Practise making ten different coffees to café standard

Food safety — Use hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA005):

  • Safe food-handling and personal hygiene practices
  • Preventing food contamination and cross-contamination
  • Cleaning, storage and workplace hygiene procedures

By the end you’ll have the confidence and skills to step straight into a café or venue role.

This course is exclusively for current Western Sydney University students looking to get café- and hospitality-employment ready. It’s ideal if you want casual or part-time work in cafés, bars, clubs and venues while you study — the barista and food-safety tickets are exactly what employers ask for, and doing them together on campus is the fastest, best-value way to qualify. The course is delivered hands-on, on campus at Western Sydney University across three trainer-led sessions, as part of NCVE’s Cafe & Club program. You’ll train on real espresso equipment with experienced industry professionals, combining practical skills with the food-safety knowledge cafés require — with individual learning support throughout. A free Unique Student Identifier — required for any nationally recognised course. We can’t issue your certificates without it.

Current driver licence, NSW Photo Card, proof-of-age card or passport (not expired more than 3 months).

A unique email

Your own email address — it becomes your login and can’t be shared with another student.

Assessment is a mix of practical demonstrations, short written answers and observation across both units — guided by a real trainer the whole way. Learners under 18 need parental consent.
