The aged care worker salary NSW 2026 is one of the most searched questions for anyone considering a career in aged care — and the answer has changed dramatically in the last two years. Following a series of landmark wage increases driven by the Fair Work Commission’s Aged Care Work Value Case, the aged care worker salary NSW workers can expect has risen by more than 30% since 2023. Here’s the full picture.

WHAT IS THE AGED CARE WORKER SALARY NSW IN 2026?

In NSW, aged care workers currently earn an average of $25 to $31 per hour depending on experience, classification level, and employer. SEEK data shows full-time aged care worker salaries in Australia now sit between $65,000 and $75,000 per year, with Sydney rates tracking slightly above the national average at around $28 per hour according to Indeed.

For entry-level workers holding a Certificate III in Individual Support and starting their first aged care role, the Fair Work Ombudsman’s current award rates place full-time weekly earnings between approximately $910 and $1,100 per week — depending on classification level and shifts worked.

THE AGED CARE PAY RISES — WHAT HAPPENED?

Aged care workers in Australia have received some of the most significant pay rises of any industry in recent years. Here’s the timeline:

2023: A 15% award wage increase was delivered to direct care workers as Stage 2 of the Aged Care Work Value Case — recognising that aged care work had long been undervalued.

January 2025: Further increases took effect under the Aged Care Award and SCHADS Award, alongside a new six-level classification structure. General workers received a 3% increase, while direct care workers received increases ranging from 2.3% to 13.5% depending on classification. Workers with a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) are appointed at Level 3 under the new structure.

October 2025: A second phase of increases took effect for direct care employees including home care workers. Support workers in catering, cleaning and laundry received a further 7% increase.

August 2026: A further round of increases is scheduled for registered and enrolled nurses working in aged care.

HOW DOES YOUR QUALIFICATION AFFECT YOUR aged care worker salary NSW?

Your qualification directly determines your classification level under the Aged Care Award — and that determines your pay. Workers with a Certificate III in Individual Support are appointed at Level 3 of the new direct care structure, which is the recognised entry point for qualified aged care workers. After four years at Level 3, workers progress to Level 4 Senior — the Fair Work Commission set this rate at $33.00 per hour from January 2025.

Workers who go on to complete a Certificate IV in Ageing Support can progress further into team leader, care coordinator, and supervisory roles that attract higher pay and greater responsibility.

WHAT AGED CARE JOBS ARE AVAILABLE IN NSW?

As a qualified cert 3 individual support graduate, you could work as a personal care worker or personal care assistant in a residential aged care facility, a home care worker supporting clients in their own homes across Western Sydney or regional NSW, an assistant in nursing working under the supervision of registered nurses, or a community support worker with a local community services organisation.

Demand for qualified aged care workers in NSW continues to grow strongly. Australia’s ageing population means the sector needs to recruit at least 110,000 additional direct care workers over the next decade — making it one of the most secure career pathways available right now.

IS AGED CARE A GOOD CAREER IN 2026?

The combination of a strong aged care worker salary NSW workers can now access, long-term job security, and clear career pathways makes aged care one of the most compelling career choices in NSW in 2026. A few years ago, low pay was the main barrier to entering the sector. The award wage increases have addressed that directly — and with further increases scheduled through 2026, the trajectory is firmly upward.

Beyond the pay, aged care offers something hard to find in many industries: genuine meaning. Every shift, you’re making a real difference in the lives of older Australians who need support to live independently and with dignity.
