Certificate III in Community Services

I’ve already done some of this — can I get credit?

Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer both apply to the Certificate III in Community Services. If you have relevant experience, or you have already completed matching units somewhere else, we assess it — and your fee is worked out on what you still need to complete, so it can come down. Can I pay it off, or do I need it all up front?

You pay as you go. $650 to start, which includes your first unit, then $120 per unit as you work through — $1,970 for the whole qualification, or $1,576 if you pay up front. Afterpay and ZipPay are available, and there is no contract: you only pay for the units you actually do. If you are eligible for Smart & Skilled in NSW you may pay considerably less, and there are fee-free places on this qualification — the calculator above works out your figure.

Is this course fee free?

Right now, yes — for eligible students there is nothing to pay. Certificate III in Community Services currently has fee-free places funded by the NSW Government, and eligible students pay $0. Places are limited and are released in July and January each year, and we confirm availability with you before you enrol. Call 1800 180 881 and we will tell you on the spot whether a place is open and whether you qualify. If there isn’t one, the NSW Smart & Skilled student fee is $1,450 ($240 with a concession), or $1,970 fee-for-service.

Am I eligible for Smart & Skilled funding?

Generally you need to live or work in NSW, be 15 or older, have left school, and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen. Other criteria can apply. Don’t try to work it out yourself — tell us your situation and we check it for you at enrolment, at no cost and with no obligation.

What does it cost if I’m not eligible for funding?

$650 to start, which covers your enrolment and your first unit, then $120 per unit across the remaining 11 — $1,970 for the full qualification. Pay in full up front instead and it’s $1,576, saving you $394. Afterpay and ZipPay are available, and there’s no lock-in contract.

How is this different from Certificate III in Individual Support?

Individual Support is hands-on personal care — aged care and disability support, with a mandatory 120-hour work placement. Community Services is the broader community-facing side: client advocacy, crisis response, mental health, intake and first contact, youth and family support. If you want to work in someone’s home or an aged care facility, do Individual Support. If you want to work in a community organisation, this is the one. Both are Smart & Skilled funded in NSW.

Do I have to do a work placement?

Not as a requirement of the qualification. CHC32015 doesn’t mandate work placement in its rules — that’s the main practical difference between this and Certificate III in Individual Support, where 120 hours of placement is compulsory. If a unit needs you to demonstrate a skill in a real setting, we’ll help you find a suitable place rather than leaving you to arrange it yourself. Some roles and organisations will still ask for a police check or Working With Children Check.

Can I do this course from outside NSW?

You can study it online from anywhere in Australia, but Smart & Skilled funding is NSW only — outside NSW it’s the fee-for-service price. Face-to-face classes run at our NSW locations including Batemans Bay, Nowra, Goulburn, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Mount Druitt and Parramatta.

Will I need a police check or Working With Children Check?

Possibly, depending on the roles and placements involved — many community services employers require one or both. You don’t need them to enrol, and we’ll guide you on what’s needed and when rather than leaving you to find out at the wrong moment.

Can I do this around a full-time job?

Yes. The theory is online and self-paced, you have up to 12 months from enrolment, and your trainer works around your hours by phone or one-to-one video. There’s no scheduled class you have to take leave for, and face-to-face is there if you’d rather have it.

English is my second language — is that a problem?

No. There’s a short language, literacy and numeracy check when you enrol. It isn’t a test you pass or fail — it tells your trainer what support you need. Community services work is full of people who speak more than one language, and that’s an asset in this field, not an obstacle.

What if an employment provider is paying for me?

That’s common and we handle it regularly. Tell us who your provider is and we’ll deal with them directly on the fees and the paperwork — you don’t have to broker it yourself.

Do I get a real trainer, or a chatbot?

A named trainer with sector experience, for the whole course. You can phone them or book a one-to-one video session — no helpdesk queue, and no AI marking your assessments.

How long does it take, and can I finish faster?

You have up to 12 months from enrolment and it’s self-paced, so you can go faster. Your trainer sets a realistic plan with you rather than leaving you to guess.

What jobs does this lead to?

Community support worker, mental health support worker, intake and first contact officer, youth and family support, and client advocate roles. CHC32015 is recognised by employers Australia-wide and is a clear pathway into further study in community services and mental health.

What do I need to enrol?

A USI — a free Unique Student Identifier, get one here — photo ID such as a driver licence, photo card or passport, and the short LLN check. Photo ID also lets us verify your Smart & Skilled eligibility. No prior qualifications and no experience required.

What units will I study?

12 nationally recognised units — 5 core (respond to client needs, communicate and work in health or community services, work with diverse people, safe work practices for direct client care, and manage personal stressors) plus 7 electives covering client advocacy, responsible behaviour, crisis response, first point of contact, mental health, partnerships and work priorities.
