Our Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB40520) is for anyone moving into a supervisor, team leader or frontline management role. You’ll build the skills to communicate effectively, lead and develop teams, manage workplace relationships and coordinate operations. It’s NSW Smart & Skilled funded (Targeted Priorities) — eligible students pay a heavily subsidised fee (the exact amount depends on your circumstances, confirmed at enrolment). I’ve already done some of this — can I get credit?
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer both apply to the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. If you have relevant experience, or you have already completed matching units somewhere else, we assess it — and your fee is worked out on what you still need to complete, so it can come down. Can I pay it off, or do I need it all up front?
You pay as you go. $650 to start, which includes your first unit, then $120 per unit as you work through — $1,970 for the whole qualification, or $1,576 if you pay up front. Afterpay and ZipPay are available, and there is no contract: you only pay for the units you actually do. If you are eligible for Smart & Skilled in NSW you may pay considerably less — the calculator above works out your figure.
What units will I study?
12 nationally recognised units — 5 core (communication strategies, demonstrate leadership, lead workplace relationships, lead and facilitate a team, coordinate operational plans) plus 7 electives covering work priorities, communicating as a leader, leading difficult conversations, WHS, emotional intelligence, customer service strategies and business relationships. How much does it cost, all up?

Do I need to be a manager already?
No, and most students aren’t. This is the qualification people take when they’ve just been given a team, or want to be considered for one. The five core units are the practical end of the job — leading a team, coordinating operational plans, building workplace relationships and communicating as a leader — and there’s an elective specifically on leading difficult conversations, which is usually the part nobody has trained you for.
Do I have to do a work placement?
No. There’s no work placement in this qualification. It’s assessed on the work you submit, so you can complete the whole thing online around your job. If you are leading a team already, you can build the assessments around your actual workplace rather than a case study.
Can I do this around a full-time job?
Yes, and nearly everyone does — this is a qualification people take while working. It’s online and self-paced, you have up to 12 months from enrolment, and your trainer works around your hours by phone or one-to-one video. There’s no scheduled class you have to take leave for.
Can I do this course from outside NSW?
You can study it online from anywhere in Australia, but Smart & Skilled funding is NSW only — outside NSW it’s the fee-for-service price. In-person support is available at our NSW locations: Batemans Bay, Nowra, Goulburn, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Mount Druitt and Parramatta.
Can I get credit for units I’ve already completed?
Yes, if you hold relevant units from another provider — that’s a credit transfer. Because you pay per unit, credit means you pay less. Send us your statement of attainment when you enrol and we’ll tell you exactly what carries across before you pay for anything.
Should I do this or the Diploma of Leadership and Management?
The Certificate IV is for people stepping into leading a team for the first time. The Diploma is the next level up and suits people already managing, or managing managers. If you’re not sure, the Cert IV credits toward the Diploma, so starting here isn’t a wasted step — and the Cert IV is the cheaper of the two under Smart & Skilled ($1,580 against $2,530, with no concession rate on the Diploma).
Do I get a real trainer, or a chatbot?
A named trainer with management experience, for the whole course. You can phone them or book a one-to-one video session — no helpdesk queue, and no AI marking your assessments. On a leadership course where the assessments are about your own team, having someone who will actually read them and talk them through is the difference.
What jobs does this lead to?
Team leader, supervisor, coordinator, 2IC and frontline manager roles across almost any industry — BSB40520 isn’t sector-specific, which is why it travels well. It’s also the usual prerequisite people are asked for before being put forward for a Diploma of Leadership and Management.
Can I do it as a traineeship?
Yes — it can be completed as a traineeship, where you’re employed and the government subsidises the training.
