I’ve already done some of this — can I get credit?

Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer both apply to the Diploma of Leadership and Management. If you have relevant experience, or you have already completed matching units somewhere else, we assess it — and your fee is worked out on what you still need to complete, so it can come down. Is Smart & Skilled actually cheaper for this course?

Often not, and we would rather tell you. The Smart & Skilled student fee at Diploma level is $2,530 and there is no concession rate, so most students pay the full amount. Paying NCVE directly is $1,576 up front — $954 less. Fee exemptions still apply if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or meet the disability criteria, in which case funding is the better route. Can I pay it off, or do I need it all up front?

You pay as you go. $650 to start, which includes your first unit, then $120 per unit as you work through — $1,970 for the whole qualification, or $1,576 if you pay up front. Afterpay and ZipPay are available, and there is no contract: you only pay for the units you actually do.

Are there any entry requirements?

There’s no mandatory prerequisite. A Cert IV in Leadership & Management or management experience is a recommended pathway, and we’ll confirm your readiness with you before you enrol.

How much does it cost, all up?

This qualification is on the Smart & Skilled Targeted Priorities list, so if you’re eligible you pay a heavily subsidised student fee of $2,530. There’s no concession rate at Diploma level. Paying fee-for-service, you start with $650, which covers your enrolment and your first unit, then it’s $120 per unit across the remaining 11 — $1,970 in total, or $1,576 if you pay in full up front. Note that fee-for-service is the cheaper option here unless your circumstances change the subsidised figure, so ask us to run both before you decide. Should I do this or the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management?

The Certificate IV is for people stepping into leading a team for the first time. This Diploma is the level above — it suits people already managing, or managing other managers, and it’s the qualification usually asked for before someone is considered for a genuine management role rather than a supervisory one. If you hold the Cert IV, units may carry across as a credit transfer and reduce what you pay here.

Do I have to do a work placement?

No. There’s no work placement in this Diploma. It’s assessed on the work you submit, so you can complete the whole thing online around your job — and if you’re managing a team already, you can build the assessments around your actual workplace rather than a case study.

Can I do this around a full-time job?

Yes, and nearly everyone does — this is a qualification people take while managing. It’s online and self-paced, you have up to 12 months from enrolment, and your trainer works around your hours by phone or one-to-one video. There’s no scheduled class you have to take leave for.

Can I do this course from outside NSW?

You can study it online from anywhere in Australia, but Smart & Skilled funding is NSW only — outside NSW it’s the fee-for-service price. In-person support is available at our NSW locations: Batemans Bay, Nowra, Goulburn, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Mount Druitt and Parramatta.

Can I get credit for units I’ve already completed?

Yes, if you hold relevant units from another provider — that’s a credit transfer, and it’s common at Diploma level where people arrive with a Certificate IV behind them. Because you pay per unit, credit means you pay less. Send us your statement of attainment when you enrol and we’ll tell you exactly what carries across before you pay for anything.

Do I get a real trainer, or a chatbot?

A named trainer with management experience, for the whole course. You can phone them or book a one-to-one video session — no helpdesk queue, and no AI marking your assessments. On a leadership qualification where the assessments are about your own team, having someone who will actually read them and talk them through is the difference.

What jobs does this lead to?

Manager, operations manager, department or business unit manager, project manager, and senior coordinator roles across almost any industry — BSB50420 isn’t sector-specific, which is why it travels. It also credits toward an Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management.

How long does it take?

Typically up to 12 months, with self-paced options to finish faster.

What do I need to enrol?

A USI — a free Unique Student Identifier, get one here — photo ID such as a driver licence, photo card or passport, and the short LLN check. Photo ID also lets us verify your Smart & Skilled eligibility.
